Types of Attic Insulation
Attic insulation keeps heat in during the winter and cool air out during summer, reducing HVAC workload and energy costs. It also improves indoor air quality by limiting the penetration of pollutants such as dust, mold, smoke and radon.
There are five primary types of attic insulation, and each is suitable for different situations and climates. Your home renovation specialist can help you choose the attic insulation type that best suits your needs and budget, whether you’re installing fiberglass batts, cellulose, spray foam or another type of loose-fill attic insulation.
How Proseal Spray Foam Enhances Energy Efficiency in Your Home
Proseal Spray Foam is a common option that’s typically made of tiny glass fibers woven together with cotton batting. It’s an affordable option that offers good fire resistance, and it works well in attics with standard joist spacing. However, it isn’t very moisture-resistant, and when it gets wet, it sags and loses its ability to insulate.
Loose-fill attic insulation is usually installed by using a blowing machine, and it’s available in different materials, including cellulose and mineral wool. Cellulose is often made from recycled newspapers that are treated with boric acid to make it flame-resistant. It’s an eco-friendly choice, but it can settle over time and reduce its R-value, and it absorbs moisture that can lead to mildew and mold.
Foam board insulation is composed of polystyrene, polyisocyanurate, or polyurethane and comes in boards or panels. It has a higher R-value per inch than other types, but it’s more expensive. It’s not suitable for cellulose joists, and it can be difficult to install due to the size of the boards.
